Effective
Terms of Service
Plain-Language Summary
- Margin Read is free, open source, and provided as-is. No warranty, no service guarantee.
- You bring your own API key. Your relationship with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or any other provider you configure is between you and them.
- You may read, fork, modify, and redistribute the code under the MIT license. The “Margin” and “Margin Works” names are not transferred by that license — please use a different name if you publish a fork.
- We collect nothing, so there is little to dispute. If you have a problem, open an issue on GitHub or email us.
Acceptance
By installing or using Margin Read, you agree to these terms. If you do not, please uninstall the extension.
License
The source code of Margin Read and the marketing site is released under the MIT License. You may read it, run it, modify it, redistribute it, and use it for any purpose, including commercial purposes, subject to the conditions of that license. The full license text lives at github.com/withmargin/margin-read/blob/main/LICENSE.
The names “Margin” and “Margin Works” are project and brand names. The MIT license covers the code; it does not grant rights to use those names in a way that suggests your fork is the official project. If you publish a derivative work, please use a different name when distributing it.
Bring Your Own Provider
Margin Read sends text to third-party AI providers — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint you configure — using API keys you supply. By using the extension you agree that:
- You have the right to use the API keys you enter (they are yours, your employer’s, or otherwise authorized).
- Your use of those providers is governed by their terms of service, not ours. Margin Works is not a party to that relationship.
- Any usage costs incurred against your API key are your responsibility.
- Any content moderation, refusal, output quality, latency, or downtime issues are between you and the provider.
No Warranty
Margin Read is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement.
Translation output is produced by third-party AI models. It may be incorrect, incomplete, biased, or otherwise unsuitable. Do not rely on machine-translated output for legal, medical, financial, contractual, safety-critical, or other consequential decisions without independent human review.
The extension may break when websites change their structure, when providers change their APIs, when Chrome changes its extension platform, or for reasons we have not anticipated. We make no guarantee of continuous operation, backward compatibility, or feature stability.
Acceptable Use
Do not use Margin Read to:
- Translate or process content that you do not have the right to access — for example, content behind paywalls you have not paid for, on sites you have been banned from, or belonging to someone else.
- Violate the terms of service of the AI provider you have configured.
- Violate applicable law in your jurisdiction or the jurisdictions of any person whose content you are translating.
We do not (and architecturally cannot) monitor your usage. This clause exists so that misuse cannot reasonably be attributed to or justified by Margin Works.
Limitation Of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Margin Works is not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages arising out of or related to your use of Margin Read, including but not limited to:
- Charges, rate-limits, or account actions taken against your API key by any provider.
- Loss, leakage, retention, or other handling of data by an AI provider you have selected.
- Translation errors, omissions, hallucinations, or biased output.
- Browser, page, or extension malfunctions arising from interaction with other extensions or with website-specific scripts.
- Service interruption, removal from the Chrome Web Store, or discontinuation of the project.
If the limitation above is found unenforceable in your jurisdiction, our aggregate liability to you is limited to the amount you have paid Margin Works in the preceding twelve months. Margin Read is free; that amount is therefore zero.
Open Source — No Special Obligations
Because the code is open source under the MIT license, you have all the rights granted by that license whether or not Margin Works continues to maintain the project. You can fork, modify, and run your own build at any time, with or without our cooperation.
Conversely, Margin Works makes no commitment to ongoing maintenance, support, response times, feature requests, or bug fixes beyond what we choose to do voluntarily. The project may slow down, change scope, or stop entirely without notice.
Changes To These Terms
Every change to these terms is committed to the public repository in apps/website/src/pages/terms.md. The commit history of that file is the canonical changelog.
Material changes will be called out in the project README. Your continued use of Margin Read after a change takes effect indicates your acceptance of the updated terms; if you do not accept a change, please uninstall the extension before continuing to use it.
Governing Law
No specific governing-law jurisdiction is designated. Margin Works operates as an open source project and prefers that disputes be raised in public on the issue tracker — github.com/withmargin/margin-read/issues — so they can be addressed transparently and to the benefit of all users.
